Holmby Hills

Along with Beverly Hills and Bel Air, Holmby Hills forms part of Los Angeles’ Platinum Triangle, an area of supreme luxury and sophistication noted for its grand homes and glamorous residents.

Hollywood stars and some of the world’s most successful business people are attracted to Holmby Hills for the incredible privacy and opulence of its homes. The spectacular location, covered landscapes, and competitive market make this neighborhood one of the most highly sought after areas to buy in Los Angeles.

The upscale feel of this neighborhood offers an air of luxury, while being in close proximity to the cultural attractions of nearby Los Angeles communities. Moving to Holmby Hills puts you next to some of the best fine-dining and shopping found anywhere in the world. Featuring upscale shopping and numerous Michelin-starred restaurants located in neighboring Beverly Hills’ famous Rodeo Drive, you’ll never run out of options for a night out.

Holmby Hills residences include grand classical architecture and stunning modern designs set on sprawling lots with gorgeous views across the Los Angeles basin. Some of Holmby Hills’ grand estates are large enough to be considered self-enclosed communities in their own right, with many featuring scores of bedrooms, unimaginably luxurious amenities such as gyms, outdoor sports courts and swimming pools. There are also even more incredible bespoke features such as full-scale cinemas and an indoor home nightclub for private parties.

The neighborhood, itself, is also known for its large displays of wealth, modern charm, and its appeal to decadence. With Hollywood’s elite living right next door, the attention to detail is extremely careful, which means that houses in Holmby Hills are complete with all of the latest and greatest in terms of architecture, interior design, and state of the art security.

Numerous celebrities have built sprawling dream homes within the privacy of Holmby Hills, with some of its most breathtaking properties being valued at upwards of $100 million. While rare, these sprawling estates make this area highly coveted. One famous example is the former residence of pop stars Sonny and Cher, a Tuscan mansion covering 12,000 square feet and boasts an estimated worth of $180 million! Needless to say, the average price of a home in Holmby Hills goes for much less, and buyers can expect a competitive market starting around $2-3 million.

Holmby Hills has a rich history that goes along with the upscale neighborhood that it represents. Originally, it began as a home to the Tongva Native Americans. Later, it was granted to a Spanish soldier who took over the land where present-day UCLA is now located. After being granted by several mayors to multiple people, and becoming the site of the Wolfskill Ranch. When John Wolfskill died in 1913, his ranch was the most valuable piece of land between Beverly Hills and the ocean. His heirs sold the 3,296 acre ranch to Broadway Department Store founder, Arthur Letts, Sr. for $2,000,000 in 1919.

Three years later, the Janss brothers re- purchased the land for $7,000,000. On the former Wolfskill Ranch’s most picturesque land, the Janss Investment Company prepared a 400-acre estate district known as Holmby Hills. The lots ranged from 1 to 4 acres each and all the houses had to cost at least $25,000, $5,000 more than the minimum in Bel Air. In 1925, the estate sites hit the market. A decade later, mansions began popping up on the surrounding hills as Hollywood began booming and churning out movie stars, loaded with cash, and looking for the hottest neighborhoods.

Aside from being nestled in the privacy and security of the Platinum Triangle, Holmby Hills is also an ideal place for raising a family. Complete with easy access to the rest of LA, the secluded nature means that safety is a top priority.

Families are able to choose from top-knotch districts such as Warner Avenue Elementary and Middle School, as well as University High School.

After high school, California residents can take advantage of lower in-state tuition at UCLA’s campus which is located just a few blocks away.

Many stars of the entertainment industry have constructed exquisite estates within Holmby Hills, including Walt Disney, who built a home with a miniature railroad track in its surroundings. Fans of pop culture may be surprised to learn that Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion is one of Holmby Hills’ most notorious residences.

Other famous names to have resided in Holmby Hills includes a long list of Hollywood royalty and music icons such as Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, and the King and Queen of hip-hop themselves, Jay Z and Beyoncé.

Along with stunning architecture and being in close proximity to all of Los Angeles’ vibrant cultural amenities, Holmby Hills has an abundance of charming green spaces including two sycamore tree-ringed golf courses. The Armand Hammer 9-hole public putting green is at Holmby Park and is in close proximity to the prestigious Los Angeles Country Club, which has been selected to hold the 2023 US Open.
